here, chicky chicky!

if you are looking for the sew, mama, sew giveaway post, please click here

on saturday we, along with 'M' went to the annual downtown chicken coup tour!  the husband and i have been before but it was 'M's first experience with backyard chickens...

this frog was in a fish pond in front of one of the coops

this is the pond...

now i want a pond in our back yard...

this was one of the chickens in the yard with the pond...i really like these black and white 'speckled' ones...

a big fat chicken headed for some food (same coop)

eating her breakfast...and yes i know it's a her...cause there were no roosters in any of the coops...you don't need a rooster to get eggs...you only need a rooster in order to get fertile eggs...

in another backyard coop, these chickens were hungry and ate feed out of some kids hands

same coop as the eating chickens, these ladies were trying to lay eggs...in almost every coop we saw they liked to share nesting boxes...looks uncomfortable to me!

at this coop, all ten chickens have the run of the entire front yard...in the evenings the owner just goes outside and says 'BED' and all the girls run to their coop for the nite!

i didn't get any pictures of the 3 chickens at this coop, but the kids that lived there had made large posters about each chicken...be sure to click on the picture to enlarge and read what they had to say about their chickens...it's so sweet!

i LOVE the bottle trees in this backyard!!! there were 4 i think...

yeah, it was a chicken tour...but i was just taking in all the lovely backyards...and taking pictures of everything BUT the chickens...cause i'm nosey like that...

the same people had made a small retaining wall/border out of wine bottles!

here was their coop...it was very colorful! see the 2 nesting boxes inside?

on the way out of the yard we noticed a 'river' made from broken pottery...how genious!

and in the last coop we went in there was a chandelier...yes, i said CHANDELIER in the middle of the outside run...it's there to the left of the middle vertical post...the bright spot...they also had a tree with vegetables hanging off it for the chickens to eat...the coop (which i didn't picture) was nicer than my house...

i'm sure we will take the tour again next year as we really enjoy it AND we are super interested in getting some chickens ourselves...in fact, i've already started coming up with names for them....here are some of my top picks:
  • mabel, henrietta, pearl, monica, lucy
what do you think would be a good name for a pet chicken?

Omg, so cute!! I love chickens! And the signs the kids made were the cutest. Looks like a fun tour!
I love your chicken names. :)
My mom has ducks - and 17 duckling eggs!! I really really want to get a couple of the ducklings when they are born. :)

Hi Kristie! We're practically neighbors cause we live over to your west near Pittsboro. Glad to see a first hand account of the Chicken Tour. It was on my might go see list but junque shopping won out!

We used to have 3 lovely little hens when we lived in Chapel Hill and one was named Lucy. She was red.

Love your "nosy" pictures too :)

That is too neat! I'd read something on a local blog that they are trying to do something similar to this in our downtown. or maybe there are people that already do it but an ordanice is trying to make them stop...I can't remember. BUT, anyway, I wish they had a tour like this.

I've always wanted to call a pet chicken Henrietta. I named a duck that once that we always saw at a pond we went to. I usuallyname most any animal we come in contact with. Is that weird?

I have to say that I love the wine bottle retaining wall idea. My boyfriend works for Coors and they get free beer each month and we are left with tons of bottles. And it just so happens that we are redoing the whole garden area. Hmm, will have to bring it up to him.
