weekend update: sugar overload EDITED

last friday the husband went to the monthly birthday breakfast for his office (his birthday is this thursday)...apparently if it's your first time eating at the restaurant they give you four ginormous muffins to take home?!?! okay by me! i'll take free muffins any day of the week:

they are so big we split one each day for breakfast and froze 2 for next weekend!
friday nite we went to see alison krauss and robert plant...i've seen them both before separately but ever since they made this collaborative album i've been intrigued...their genres are so completely different from one another, how could they possibly work together and the outcome be any good?...BUT it's fabulous! i loved the concert...click on the link and give it a listen or watch the video for 'gone gone gone'...

(here's the edited part, thanks page!)...saturday morning tyler had his annual vet checkup...in regards to how they all act going to the vets, tyler is the best...he's so sweet and everyone there always compliments him...there were no problems found, he sat very still for his rabies vaccine and he weighs in at a staggering...wait for it...13.31 lbs! the vet who saw him (it's a large practice) couldn't believe it when we told her he wasn't even our biggest...

the rest of saturday and sunday i made a birthday cake for MIL as we were having a party sunday nite for her at a local swimming pool...saturday was devoted to making the decorations...the theme was 'beach' or 'ocean' so i made white chocolate seashells and coral...

here are the 4 pieces of 'coral'...i made them freehand on wax paper with melted white chocolate in a pastry bag fitted with a plain tip and then popped them in the fridge to harden...then i brushed on pearl powder...can you see the difference between the ones on the left (pearlized) and the ones on the right (not pearlized yet)?

while i was slaving in the kitchen the husband was slaving in the yard trimming all of our out of control hedges...since it was crazy hot and humid i made us a couple of fruity adult beverages and we sat under a tree and took a break:

wow, that's a giant bug in the yard!

the husband contemplates his next move with the hedge clippers

sunday i got up bright and early...ate my half a muffin...and baked the cake layers and made the buttercream frosting...then it was time to assemble the cake...although a lot of the coral pieces broke i was pleased with how it turned out...if i ever do a cake with the coral again i will go back over it with another layer of white chocolate to make it stronger:

the boys help mimi blow out her candles!

oh baby, that buttercream is good!

hope your weekend was sweet too...

That cake turned out fabulous. Great job!

Those muffins look delish. We have a Mimi's cafe but i have never been, those free muffins may just get me there.

Excellent job on the cake, very pretty. I would love those muffins too, although I'm pretty sure I could eat all of one by myself!
