raleigh wide open - 2

on saturday we headed downtown for the second annual 'raleigh wide open' event. last year at the first 'raleigh wide open', fayetteville street which runs from the state capital building to the performing arts center (where we went to see grease) was reopened to traffic after being a pedestrian mall for as long as i can remember...this is all part of an attempt to revitalize our downtown...70,000 people showed up and crammed in about a 6 block stretch...it was crazy! this year it wasn't nearly as crowded...we arrived close to 5pm and the husband and 'M' got beer passports and did the beer garden...the selection at the wine garden was lacking so we passed on it...at 6pm the parade started:

the state capital building and beginning of the parade route

the mayor and his family in a nifty old car...

this 'wagon' belongs to the owners of the ace hardware at seaboard station where we went last weekend...

the spca was represented on a float...

who would paint their dog pink???

this float is advertising the free outdoor concerts that are held monthly in one of the downtown parks...

remember stormy? he's the carolina hurricanes mascot...too bad we don't have the stanley cup to ride on the float this year...

bringing up the rear was ladder truck no. 1...it's driven from the front and back so they were zig-zagging down the street...

this is the view from the capital building down to the performing arts center (building with columns)...all the cranes are due to massive construction going on...i think we have something like 6 or 8 tower cranes downtown right now!

donkey carriage ride...

'two tickets to paradise' eddie money was the 'big act' i suppose...followed by fireworks and the unveiling of our sir walter raleigh statue which has been missing for a few years while he was being refurbished...but we missed all of that cause we went home...but on the way we had to drive right past krispy kreme and the 'hot donuts now' sign was on...need i say more?

i took a few pictures of our downtown and will post them in the coming days...

Have you always lived in Raleigh?
I wouldn't be able to pass up that "Hot Donuts Now" sign either!

We had a very similiar parade in our downtown in the Spring. I think it's great that many towns are beginning to re-vamp their downtown areas.

And that poor pink dog! Why don't people just let their pets be pets and not fashion accessories!?!?!

I enjoyed seeing that parade and the sights. Were they throwing candy during the parade. That seems to be the thing to do in P'cola is throw candy during any and all parades. I love some of Eddie Money's songs. Blast from the past. Kripsy Kreme....my friend!
